2 days 'till Madrid!

Many of you already know that Longboard girls crew is throwing a 100k party in Madrid 26.4.
As soon as I heard about this, I booked my flights.
Mojito in Moyano?

I was in Madrid last year for a bit over a week.
It was awesome! Good places to slide, and a couple good hills to practise my tuck.
Also cheap Sangria is a BIG plus.
Last time I was there I  found a place to sleep trough Couchsurfing.
I stayed with Mike and his two girl roomates, they are now my favorite russians!
When I decided to go to the party I just contacted Mike trough facebook and luckyly I can sleep on their couch again.

This time the trip is going to be a bit different.
People in madrid are throwing couple of competitions like Slide jam, Night race and Plactic slalom.
I have already registrated to the Slide jam and the Night race.
Im not that into slalom (and really not good at it)
but maybe I just go and watch other people skate!
Moyano, Place where the slide jam is held.

I really hope that these couple of days go by quickly.
I have had a rough and really depressing couple of weeks and I really just need a change on scenery.
I got a new backpack last week, I will pack all my troubles and bad feelings in there, carry them in Madrid and leave them there.
But right now I feel happier than I have felt in a long, long time!
Wet stand up slides in Moyano last year.
I still think that everything happens for a reason, I got invited to attend tests for getting to study next fall. One of them is held while im in Madrid, but I think that in that case, it's not the right place for me to go.
Also Im travelling with Kaisa, so the trip can't go wrong!
I'm looking fovard meeting the whole girls crew!

I still have tomorrow to practice my slides for the Slide jam after the the test Im taking in school.
Need to get my stand ups right and maybe also practise one foot slides.

Before I finish I want to thak Jenni for borrowing her GoPro camera for our trip, I promise we'll take good care of it!
I also want to thank Jani for sponsoring me with yet another Lonkenstein promo t-shirt, now i dont have to brake my own shirts at the slide jams! It has my favorite print; DRUNKEN WHALE!

/Roosa-Liida
All of the pictures are from last year when I was skating in Madrid.
Jacky and Oceane, miss you girls!

Dekeissä on mieletön määrä, joista valita. Paras on hankkia laadukas lauta heti alkuun. Parasta on testata, kokeilla mahdollisimman monia ennen ostoa.

Helppo tapa valita laakerit on valita laakerit, joissa on spacer kiinnetettynä.

Grippejä on monenlaisia eri karheusasteita.

Hauskaa lonkkarishoppailua!

How to buy your first longboard?

Stoked about longboarding? Maybe you saw amazing picture/video about longboarding or you saw a gorgeous dude/dudette longboarding in the city or maybe you tried your friends board and you fell in love with longboarding?

Next step is to get your first own longboard!

There are few things you should think about before you buy your first board. Don't choose it because of the colour or graphics like I did, it's wasted money.

First of all it is good to figure out what you want to do with it. Do you want to just cruise around and use it as a transport from places to another. Then more flexible deck is better and lighter to carry around. Especially if you want to cruise around in the city center it is more nicer and better to cruise around with a shorter and a lighter board. I have tried Plums custom boards which gives you a really sweet ride. They are handmade in Finland. Some people might even  like a little bit of tail in decks but I don't need it because I'm not good using it at all and generally thinking they are not that handy with longboards. For beginner it might be easier to use wider deck so it's more easier to keep balance while learning to push. In long distance pushing I prefer drop through deck with a little bit of flexi, so its closer to the ground, lighter, more steady and easier to push. I have used Lush longboards Generator last summer, which was good for everything exept high speeds. Now I'm really interested in Fibretec boards, its a small Swiss company and all boards are made of carbon fiber so they are really light but strong. Then there are dancing boards which are much fun to do dancing tricks like cross-stepping. It is good to pick light, flexible, wider and longer deck for cross-stepping and dancing tricks.
Plum

If you know that you are a speed maniac, wish to go as fast as you can and push your limits with a downhill deck you need a downhill deck. They are stiff, heavier, steadier bords and needs more gripping wheels. There are huge variety in downhill boards too. There are drop through decks (where trucks come through the deck) and top mount decks (trucks are under the deck) where drop through means stedier ride but its maybe harder to drift in the corners, top mount is easier in the corners and with slides but maybe in high speed you might get more speed whobbles. On my opinion Rayne longboards are mercedes of downhill boards, I have Rayne Isis, which is quite like Rayne babykillswitch. It's better to girls and smaller men.
Rayne/Fibretec/Lonkenstein

There are huge variety of longboards and it is good to buy quality board first time than to spend money on rubbish. Good board you can always sell in case you are not that into it. Best way to find out what board feels good  is to try many of them.  You can try different boards in longboard shops, longboard makers or join a local session. One good way is to ask from a internet forum (www.nordicriders.com), or from facebook, to try out different boards and people will help you for sure. Especially in Helsinki, Turku, Tampere and Kuopio has a bigger longboard scene in Finland. And I think Jyväskylä and Rovaniemi longboarding are getting bigger all the time.

Wheels are important for the first board and I recommend you give a thought to them too. I used last summer only Cult Deathrays. They were my only wheels and I used them in sliding, cruising and downhill. If you want to learn sliding, it's a bit harder with softer wheels (needs more speed) but I learned to do everything with them. I think I would have saved myself from a lots of burned skin if I had used harder wheels in the beginning. So there are few other wheels that we have experienced good to start with. Seismic landslides which Roosa made her first stand ups are good for sliding and also big and soft enough to pleasent cruising. Also Cult Classics and Metro motions are very popular wheels for the same reasons. They slide very well but there is also enough gripping to go faster. If you know that you just want to cruise around it's good to have softer and bigger wheels that give you a nice smooth ride. Finnish concrete and asfalt are pretty rough so softer is more pleasent for cruising and bigger wheels means less pushing. Then again, if you think you might want to even try sliding later it's better to buy freeride wheels that fits for everything, for example those I mentioned above. Wheels for downhill is good to be more gripping in high speed so you can stay in the road, I recommend Cult deathrays or Cult gamma rays. Abec 11 is very popular brand as they are mercedes for wheels and lots of people trust their wheels. I haven't tried them though, not yet. Good size for first wheels are 70mm they fit to most decks very well without any wheelbite.

There are lots of quality trucks. Good trucks to choose for your first board are Paris trucks, good quality and lots of satisfied users. They are good for sliding, cruising and downhill. I dont have much exeperience in different trucks but you can get started with these very well.

Best way to pick bearings is to take Biltin bearings. Then you dont need spacers or those small rings :D For your first board you can use any bearings, there are so many. Then it's goot to use spacers.

Bushings make a huge impact on how the board and trucks will work but I find them hard to pick. Good way is to try them or ask from someone who knows more about them. They are probably the cheapest part of a longboard. So they are easy to replace. Softer bushings you choose, easier the trucks will turn.

There are lots of different webshops you can find in the internet, probably in every country. Or you can go to a local longboardshop for example Boardsport in Helsinki or Offshore in Tampere and they will help you to choose your first complete board. I have noticed that these guys in these shops are supernice and will help you with everything what will come to your set up afterwards. In Boardsport you can get a good quality set up that lasts for long starting from the 200€.

If you want a longboard that is made in Finland there are plenty to choose from. Then you can have a board you want.  Plum Longboards makes custom longboards from all your wishes with exepertise and especially when you are lighter or heavier person its good to have a custom board so you get just the right flexi and qualities you wish to have. Complete Plum longboard starts from: 299€ with abec11 wheels.  Lonkenstein makes their boards in Lahti,  Reindeer longboards are in Lieto and Republic longboards close to Helsinki.
These were all my own opinions and I hope they will help you to buy your first longboard. Trust your feeling about the board. Can't wait to skate with you!

Have fun at longboardshopping!

One new reason to buy new jeans: SLIDING!

When you start longboarding you never knew that you would start sliding with it too. I know it from my own experience! First I used all my abandoned jeans from the closet and after that I started to realise that they are all gone with the asfalt. So its a great reason to buy new ones!

Even more better is to buy used jeans from second hand stores, it's more ecological too. Here is a good example how to recycle: Juho has bought himself a sewing machine and now sews patches from other clothes to cover up holes in jeans, go Juho! *.* And he has done it too with a woollen one, fabulous!

Taas yksi hyvä syy miksi harrastaa lonkkarointia!

Fiilistellen taitavia ystäviä

Life begins end of your comfort zone!

Mark Twain once wrote: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
It is better to travel well than to arrive.

And that's what I did. I went to bigger and longest hills I've ever skated and I loved it! If you have ever fell in love at first sight you know that feeling I got there. I fell in love with longboarding again and again after every run. There was a smile on my face that nothing could take away. It was in Liberic and we planned to camp in the bottom of the hill and skate it more in the morning. Go with the flow and you might end up with more than you ever wanted.

Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.  Ashley Smith.
From Kozakov we were driving to Prague when we saw this amazing castle and climbed up to see it.

Prague was beautiful. I changed my ride to Rayne's car and  were travelling now with Aussies and Julia. We stopped by this supercute bakery near the German border and almost eat that whole bakery empty. After that we ended up to the hill where IGSA organised World Championship race in 2010.
This was the biggest hill I ever skated and yeah the last one for the summer 2011. We camped in the bottom of this hill too close to  a cold stream.  I had amazing time there as always with friends and I was longboarding better than ever!!! Too bad that all good things must comes to an end.
I got one helicopter ride, amazing medicin and a whole new adventure in Straubing hospital. Sometimes life stops you physically so you can move forward emotionally. Life gives you as much as you can handle.  I broke my foot but I got a lot more back. Started this association to promote longboarding in Finland especially among girls but also in general. I met new people on my trip who really left their mark in my heart. I have learned more about me and my friends that I could write a book about it.

Anyway this incident taught me to be more aware of my own limits, not to skate when I'm tired, to wear all your safety gear every time you skate and to be precautious what comes to accidents. And when you do all this you still can end up in situations like this, its just life.

What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Now I'm back on my longboard and trying to overcome my fears.

Skate safe!

Downhills of Europe started from KOZAKOV

I was nervous. It was going to be my first race abroad, first World cup race that finnish girls had ever taken part of and my biggest hill ever. I was heading to Insul in Germany. But before that, it was time to enjoy some Czech food, hills and tent life. Kozakov is usually first Euro downhill race on IGSA tour. IGSA is International gravity sports association which organises for example World Cup series. And as a part of that is Euro down hill series and Europian championship race.  Lots of longboarders meet up in Kozakov after seeing each other for a while and there is a huge party, or that was what I heard. Rad hill, rad longboarders and lots of hay bales to crash.

I arrived there just when the party started at night!  I missed out rainy days qualification runs but race day was sunny and amazing. Everything was super cheap, you could easily draw 2000 from the wall. Watch out cheap booze and tent of LOVE, so you dont miss out any action. Or you can always make your own action. I have to admit that I had no idea who were top skaters and who were not, everybody looked the same and everybody were partying together. Afterwards I had few friends more than the night before. Everywhere I go, everywhere I travel, the most valuable thing I bring home are the experiences with awesome new people. Sometimes even a little time with right person can make a huge difference in your life. Remember that!
Team Finland

Best part of Kozakov was entertaining hill with tight corners and speed, amazing partytent with haywar and super cute boys. There was a six man heats and lots of exitement in the air. It was first time for me to see people bombing hills that fast. Just watching it made me tachycardic. One guy crashed and broke his wrist in the first corner but ended up first of his run with that broken bone, respects! It was a fun race just to watch and definately not in my limits to race with 100km/h top speed. Probably only sport I enjoy watching.

Patrick Switzer won this race last year, a guy with huge warm heart and beautiful smile, go and see who is number one this year. Registration is started NOW!

Skate or diet!

Lots of skatelove

p.s What about Insul!? Find out soon...
